Chimney Pots

Clay, metal, or concrete extensions fitted on top of a chimney stack to improve the updraft and direct smoke safely away from the roof.

  • Common in traditional and period properties.

  • Come in various shapes and sizes to suit different fireplaces or stoves.

  • Can help improve chimney draft performance and reduce downdraughts

Why it matters:

Properly sized and fitted chimney pots help your flue ventilate more efficiently and maintain proper airflow.

Chimney Cowls

A device fitted to the top of a chimney pot or flue terminal to prevent:

  • Downdraughts (wind blowing smoke back into your room)

  • Rainwater ingress

  • Animal or debris entry

  • Some cowls also help increase draft for better appliance performance

  • Made from stainless steel, aluminium, or galvanized steel

  • Types include:

    • Anti-downdraught cowls

    • Rotating cowls (spin with wind to create suction)

    • H-Style cowls (for extreme wind exposure)

Why it matters:
Fitting a cowl can significantly reduce smoke blowback, moisture damage, and flue blockages.

Bird Guards

A type of cowl or cap that includes a mesh or grille to prevent birds (especially jackdaws) from nesting in the chimney.

  • Essential in rural or wooded areas.

  • Can also stop leaves, debris, and small animals from getting inside.

Why it matters:
Bird nests are one of the most common causes of chimney blockages and fire risk — a bird guard prevents this safely and humanely.
